Yellow Toenails – The Facts Behind

Featured Article

A yellow streak that runs across the nail is usually associated with certain medical conditions. it may be a sign of jaundice, liver problems, blood infections or most commonly, fungal and bacterial infections. A contagious infection, it affects adults and people who are fond of walking barefoot on damp, wet areas such as swimming pools, locker rooms and public toilets.

To confirm the diagnosis of fungal toenail infection, it is advisable for you to take a visit to the doctor for an inspection of the affected toenail or the body part so that a specimen of your toenail will be sent for laboratory studies to rule out or accept conditions concerned with having yellow toe nails, provided a fungal invasion is confirmed, the condition has its usual signs and symptoms.

Only a dot or a small portion of the nail may be affected during its early phases. over time it progresses in to a streak that runs across the toenail to the deepest parts of the nailbed and if left untreated for several days may spread to neighboring tissues such as the skin and to adjacent toe nails. Upon confirmation of the diagnosis, you should take immediate treatment to prevent complications and unhealthy, embarassing consequences.  Actually there are three types of fungus that create nail infections. all of which penetrate through a break in the skin and eventually thrive at a point causing infection.

Molds, ones responsible for growing on toenails and nailbeds. These nasty molds are often contacted by running or walking barefoot on public restrooms and wet areas. another microorganism that causes majority of yellow nail infections are dermatophytes that usually breed on nail files, clippers, rags, and carpets. the third one, is the yeast that is normally found in the body but lay dormant unless triggered by taking certain medications causing them to become overactive leading to infections.

There are several treatment approaches available for treating these infections. You may have to choose between natural home remedies and prescription medicines. Your practitioner may prescribe an over the counter treatment or oral antifungals but he/she may require further blood tests to rule out liver compromise due to the side effects of the medication such as liver damage. Some prefer to use home remedies because of its minimal side effects and affordability, which includes emu oil, almond oil, salt, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, vinegar and tea tree oil to name a few but they are known to have little or no effect.

To prevent further infections and relapse of the disease, avoid walking barefoot on swimming pools and wet surfaces. Take a load off your foot by using various shoes and cleaning regularly used footwears to minimize the growth of unwanted micro organisms. Finally, it is also useful for you to strengthen your immune system by taking vitamin supplements because immuno compromised fellows are more vulnerable to infections.

Now that i have provided the causes of fungal nail problems as well as treatments to the codition, it would be now easy for you to avoid contacting the infection. besides the large number of treatments, prevention is still the most vital way of avoiding infections.
