How To Get Rid Of Fingernail Fungus: Several Common Types Of Treatment

Featured Article

Fingernail fungus is an infection of the fungus into the nail. Fingernail fungus is highly contagious and is contracted through bare hand contact. Fingernails aren’t alive in the sense that your hand is alive. So while your hand can heal, finernails cannot. Fingernail fungus should be considered as contagious.  Infected fingernails are unsightly and embarrassing especially when you need to have hand to hand contact with others.

Naturally, many turn to medication to treat fingernail fungus.  However, treating fingernail fungus is a long process. One of the most common medication is Lamisil. Lamisil is an antifungal agent that is taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Lamisil acts by interfering with the ability of fungi to make chemicals, called sterols, that are an important part of the membrane that surrounds fungal cells and holds them together. Lamisil is a tablet used to treat nail fungus. It can also be given in cream or powder form to combat “jock itch” or “athlete’s foot” and sometimes ringworm. Lamisil side effects are probably the biggest concern for people who are taking this drug, or considering taking it, for fungus nail infections. Fungal infections are difficult to treat, and antifungal drugs are infamous for their toxicity. Lamisil side effects are very dangerous and deadly.

Therefore, it is safer to treat fingernail fungus with natural remedies.  As the length of treatment depends on your condition, natural remedies does not pose any harm in used in the long term.  Below are some of the home remedies commonly used to treat fingernail  or toenail fungus.  If your fungal condition is not serious, these remedies might work.

Vinegar treatment for fingernail or toenail infection

Using vinegar to treat fingernail fungus has become very popular. Vinegar is 5% acetic acid and it can prevent fungus from growing. Vinegar mixed with water, or hydrogen peroxide, will both make excellent soaking solutions which can help root out and destroy the fungus.  Apply this once or twice a day after washing and drying the hand and feet thoroughly.  You can try using apple cider vinegar as well.  Apple Cider Vinegar has been touted as a near miracle cure for many conditions since ancient times. Going back a couple of generations it was commonly taken as a health tonic and prescribed as a remedy for many of life’s ills.

Tea tree can also cure nail fungus. Apply a thin coat and let it dry before putting shoes and socks back on.  Apply the oil on the affected area two or three times a day until the new nail has completely grown out. This can mean about 6 months for fingernails and up to 12 months for toenails.

Vicks Vapor Rub is a product that is commonly known to fight colds and to help an individual to breathe easier. While there are no medical studies or findings to support theories, some nail fungus sufferers have reported success in using Vicks Vapor Rub for nail fungus. Vicks Vapor Rub is a popular ointment that contains a variety of aromatic oils. It’s designed to help soothe your upper respiratory tract during a cold.

Treatment of nail fungus is difficult and takes time. The same protection that your nails provide to prevent infection also act to protect the fungal infection. Treatment from the outside (topical) will help kill the fungus and provide temporary relief.  If these remedies does not work for you, you need more effective natural herbs to treat fingernail fungus from the outside as well as from within.
